Home > Preceptor Program 2011

The PENS Preceptor Program is a unique benefit exclusively for members of the Pediatric Endocrinology Nursing Society (PENS). The PENS Education Committee developed the program to help nurses new to the specialty.

Now in its 8th year, the PENS Preceptor Program matches nurses (preceptees) with one of PENS’ 12 experts in the field of pediatric endocrinology nursing (preceptors) for a 1–3 day observational visit to the preceptor’s work setting. Prior to the observational visit, preceptees receive a manual that includes information about PENS, program guidelines, orientation checklist, self-assessment tool, list of available educational materials, overview of the endocrine system, summary of relevant pathophysiology, endocrine nursing tips, information on stimulation testing, and evaluation materials.

The observational visit enables the preceptor to orient the preceptee to the role of the pediatric endocrine nurse. This role may include skilled nursing care of the pediatric endocrine patient, patient and family education, stimulation testing, organizational skills, coordination of chronic medications, and case management of the pediatric endocrine patient. At the conclusion of the visit, the preceptor and preceptee complete an evaluation of the visit. The preceptor and preceptee also remain in contact following the visit by phone and e-mail and, if possible, meet at the following PENS conference.

PENS reimburses the preceptee for airfare (or gas for car travel), hotel for 1–2 nights, parking, meals, and transportation to the site. Preceptors receive a $300 honorarium. The program is funded through a generous education grant from Genentech, Inc.
